  Chapter 1

Trina was still trying to figure out what Thursday dinner was going to be as she walked out of the elevator into the basement parking lot. She had been thinking about it the whole day and somehow, eight hours later, she was still not sure what was going to be on the dinner table. And she was not about to heat some soup or chili from a can again.

She was still scrolling through her phone when she heard someone call her name out loud, startling her. She almost dropped the phone in her hand. She turned around, her hand on her chest and looked at the security guard standing behind her holding a yellow envelope in his hand.

“Damn it, Darryl,” she said under her breath.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. I didn’t mean to startle you,” he said and she shrugged as she threw her phone in her bag.

“Well, you did but I can’t blame you. I was a little in my head there.”

He raised an eyebrow over the other.

“I did call out for you. Twice,” he said matter of factly and she shook her head.

“You did? I didn’t hear you.”

“I did, which was why I had to resort to calling you by your first name. And I sincerely apologize for that,” Darryl said and Trina exhaled loudly.

She knew exactly why she had not heard him. He must have called out for Mrs. Crews Anderson, something she was still not used to hearing. Especially since the people who insisted on using the new name were at her new firm. Back at her old firm, Hart, Hamlin, and Matthews, people still called her by her first name even after her marital status changed. Learning to answer to her new name was still a learning curve that she was yet to master.

“I have a feeling that is to do with you calling me Mrs. Crews Anderson,” she said and he shook his head.

  “That is your name.”

  Trina exhaled loudly.

“It is.” She smiled at him. “So, what can I do for you?” she asked.

“Your assistant asked me to bring you this.”

He handed her the envelope and she raised an eyebrow over the other.

  “What is it?” she asked.

“A delivery man brought it for you from HHM just as you left and I thought I would bring it to you as I brought you these,” he added as he reached into his pocket and pulled out her keys from his pocket.

“My hero,” she said in a soft voice. “My head must be in my…” She shook her head as her voice trailed off. The only word she had to finish her sentence was ass and she knew better than to use that particular word at work. She looked up and smiled at Darryl. “Thank you. And let’s just use Trina for now.”

  He nodded.

“I cannot promise I will but I will try,” he said, smiling.

“That’s all we can do, right?” she pointed out before she walked onto her car. She got in and took a long deep breath. She had half a mind to open the envelope but something inside her told her otherwise. She tossed the envelope on the passenger seat and started the engine before she began backing out of the lot.

A smile played on her lips when she thought of the joke that was probably going on in the office at that moment. She could have sworn that Darryl had most definitely shared the name joke with the rest of his friends.

It had been two years since Trina officially became Trina Crews Anderson, but every time someone called her Mrs. Anderson, she was still not sure if she should answer or not. Even the people who called her Mrs. Crews Anderson were not so lucky to get a response from her. That was how she always took so long at government offices especially the DMV. And that was a major disappointment considering she was a lawyer. It had been a learning curve for so long and it had become a joke in her new firm, Crews and Associates, mostly because it was a first for a name partner to not know when she was being addressed.

By the time she got home, it was just a little after six and Trina had decided on salmon. It was quick, it was easy, and it was delicious.

She was relieved when she got home and found that Axel’s car was not in the driveway. That could only mean one thing. He was not home yet.

She walked into the house and put on some music before she rushed upstairs and took a quick shower. She then held her hair up in a curly puff and put on a pair of sweat pants and a V-necked t-shirt. She made her way down to the kitchen and quickly cooked and set the table. She had always loved fish because of how quick it was to prepare. She had just taken wrapped up the salmon in aluminum foil when she heard the front door open and close. She looked up and smiled at Axel who was carrying his jacket in one hand and his laptop bag in the other.

“Hey, you,” she said in a soft voice.

  “Hey.”

She walked round from behind the counter and looked at him.

“Someone looks like he needs a chardonnay really bad,” she said as he walked up to where she was. He put the bag on the counter and slipped an arm around her waist to pull her close.

  “A bou
rbon would be more like it,” he said in an exhausted voice.

She forced a smile and ran her fingers through his hair.

“That bad, huh?” she asked and he nodded.

She held the back of his neck and closed her eyes as she kissed him softly.

“Or that. That works so much better than a bourbon,” he said when he pulled away. She was smiling as she looked into his eyes.

“You sure have a way to make everything sound better.”

“What can I say? It’s what a good husband does.”

She put a hand on his chest and gently tugged at his tie, pulling him downwards to kiss him again. She pulled away and leaned her forehead against his.

“You always say the sweetest things.”

  He smiled.

“Something smells good,” he said and she pulled away taking his jacket from him.

  “I made salmon for dinner.”

He raised an eyebrow over the other, surprised.

  “Salmon?”

  She nodded.

“Just what time did you get home exactly?” he asked and she shrugged.

“An hour and a half ago,” she said.

“Wow, what happened today?” he asked and she shook her head as she hang his jacket over her arm and began pulling his tie off.

“I promised you at least three homemade meals a week. And I was not about to give you something out of a can again.”

She walked to one of the chairs and hung the jacket and tie there as he took a seat.

“So,” he started, looking at her as she walked around the counter and took a glass from one of the shelves. “You never told me if the three meals a week include Sunday breakfast because if it does, you owe me a lot considering I handle most of Sunday breakfast.”

She gave him a look as she walked back to where he was holding a glass of bourbon.

“I should probably shut up, now. Huh?”

  She nodded.

  “It’s probably best.”

He smiled and took the glass from her before she walked back and got the food. She set a plate in front of him and then sat down across from him.

“Citrus glazed salmon,” he said as he looked at his plate. “Must be my lucky day.”

“You married the best woman in the world, Axel. Every day is your lucky day.”

  He smiled and then laughed.

“Of course, it is,” he said as she smiled at him. “You look beautiful.”

Her smile grew wider as felt her cheeks flush.

“I am in a t-shirt and sweatpants,” she pointed out matter of factly.

“And you look hot even in that. Plus, I can tell that there is no bra under that shirt so…” His voice trailed off when he noticed her trying hard not to laugh. “I could just come across this table right now, you know.”

“Axel Anderson, you will stay in your seat and eat that citrus glazed salmon,” she said in a warning tone.

He smiled. That was the same tone she used before she turned the heat up in the bedroom. She brushed her hair off her face as she tried getting her normal face back on.

“So,” she started as she began cutting into her fish. “How was the office today?”

He shrugged and took a bite of his fish.

“I might be making the Vegas away from Vegas dream earlier than I anticipated,” he said proudly.

  “That’s great, baby.”

“That is more than great because it marks the official move of Ornen into the Americas.”

She raised an eyebrow over the other.

“The Americas?” she asked. “Are you also looking into South America as well?”

  His smile faded almost immediately.

“Shit, I think I said too much.”

She took another bite and shook her head.

  “Said too much about what?”

She did not need to be standing right in front of him to see that he was hiding something from her.

  “Axel?”

She put her fork down and looked right at him. At first, she was really just making small talk but after he said that he had said too much, she could not help but wonder what he was on about. He looked at her and she shrugged again.

“Axel, what?” she asked and he took a long deep breath.

“It was supposed to be a surprise,” he started. “There’s this floating resort in Suriname…the owner made a bad business decision that cost him and he had to liquidate…long story short, the business that never took off was suddenly on the market and I grabbed the opportunity. He was selling it for a reasonable price and it seemed like a great investment, so I took it.”

  She shook her head.

“Why would you keep that a secret from me? I mean, it sounds like a good thing.”

He took a long deep breath and sighed.

“Well, do you remember when we first met in the Swiss Alps and you told me that snow is not your idea of a good time?”

She reached for her glass and took a sip of her chardonnay.

“You know I have changed my mind about that since I met you,” she said. “And besides, we have had our share of sun and sand since then.”

  Axel nodded.

“I know but I still wanted something special. Something that is ours.”

She took another sip of her wine before she took another bite of her food.

“I still don’t get what the big deal is here? I mean, why did that even have to be some big secret anyway?” she asked and he smiled as he looked at her.

“When I started branching out with Ornen, I thought it would be great to have the different places have their own names but still under the Ornen. Give them their own identity and everything,” he said and she nodded. “So, the new place is Ornen: The Trina Resort. I was supposed to tell you when I took you there for our anniversary.”

She was about to take the next bite when he made the announcement, but she could not bring herself to take the bite. She was just sitting there holding a piece of fish at the end of her fork like a zombie.

“Honey?” Axel asked as he looked at her. “Are you okay?”

She put the fork down and shook her head. She could feel her cheeks getting warm and then hot.

“You named it after me?” she asked and he shrugged.

“Who else was I going to name it after?”

She reached for a napkin and dabbed the side of her mouth and he pushed his chair back.

“What are you doing?” she asked as he stood up and walked up to where she was. He looked into her eyes as he stretched his hand out. She gently put her hand in his and helped her up. “Don’t you dare…” she started in a soft voice before she felt her eyes well up.

“You know I cannot let you just get all emotional without holding you,” he said as he gently stroked her hair.

“I ruined your anniversary surprise…I’m sorry,” she said as he held her and he kissed her forehead softly before he pulled away and looked into her eyes. “I don’t know why I am even crying…it was just a beautiful surprise I guess.”

He smiled as he held her close.

“You have nothing to be sorry about,” he said.

“But last year, you got me a Cartier watch and I got you a Haiku,” she pointed out and he shrugged.

  “And?”

“The traditional gift is paper, Axel.”

“Yeah, but the modern one is clocks.”

“Well, the second anniversary gift is not a private island resort in Suriname. That much I know,” she pointed out and he laughed. “I am always going to be the sucky gift spouse, aren’t I?” she asked as he pulled away from her. He looked down at her and held her cheek.

“You know, it is not a competition. Right?”

She rested her head on his shoulder and bit her lower lip.

“But if you feel so bad, you know I have a number of ways that you can make it up to me. Or at least one,” he said in a soft voice and she smiled.

“I am not putting on that show for you again. I told you that was a
one-off thing. Or at least an annual thing…your birthday.”

He looked into her eyes and frowned.

“I did get you an island,” he said matter of factly.

“And we are in the minute of your favorite fish dinner,” she said, but he was already leading her towards the living room. “Axel…”

He turned her around when they got to the living room and pulled her close to him as they began to slowly sway to the music.

“Babe, you can barely hear the music.”

“Oh, I can fix that. Easily.”

“Oh, I forgot the whole personal assistant thing,” she said, smiling as he gave the command to the home system to hike the volume on the music. He pulled her closer still and closed his eyes.

“This moment, right here. This is what makes me look forward to getting home every single day,” he said in a whisper as they danced.

Her smile grew wider as they danced slowly. She had always been skeptical of marriage mostly because she had seen a lot of them fail over the most trivial reasons. Plus, there was the additional fact that she was living in a long, extended honeymoon even though they were two years into the marriage. She slowly moved her hand up and down his back.

“Remember when we had the baby talk sometime back?” she asked in a soft voice and Axel nodded.

“Yeah. What about it?” he asked.

“I think it’s about that time.”

He pulled away and looked at her.

“Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” he asked and she nodded.

  “Yeah.”

“So…no more…” He shook his head and she smiled up at him.

“I am going to throw out the pills today...I actually haven’t been taking them for a few weeks now so there is actually no point of just looking at them day in day out,” she said, shrugging.

“You what?” Axel was smiling as he looked at her.

“When we talked about it last time, I think I was already ready to do it, but I just wasn’t very sure about when I wanted…” Her voice trailed off and she bit her lip. “I think I already knew it then. I just wasn’t ready to admit it because the thought of bringing another human into the world…I don’t want to mess our children up.”

  Axel smiled.
